Chapter 6

Edward crossed to the milliner’s to see to Cathy’s package, his mind on what had transpired in the tearoom.

The prying eyes of the folks of Highmoor had been on them from the moment they’d entered the establishment, curious and mildly remonstrative. How dare they! What Henry and he shared with Cathy was no one’s concern but their own. He could not ignore the regret that had dimmed her eyes for a moment, however. Though she said propriety did not matter to her, he knew better.

He longed to make his formal offer to her but suspected she would never accept it at present. Surely she was only just coming to realize that the three of them were meant for each other.

“Hello,” he called to the clerk, who hurried over to him.

“Yes, Mr. Linden?”

“I believe you have a package for Miss Earling. I have come to retrieve it.”

“Certainly.”

The woman hurried off to see to it as Edward perused the fabrics draped over one table, particularly one of deep blue. Like Cathy’s eyes and quite plush, nearly as soft as her skin. A notion struck him, and he approached the milliner.

“Can I help you, Mr. Linden?”

“Perhaps. I am planning to redecorate Thistle Grange, and would like to start with some pillows.”

“We do not generally make such but we can do our best to meet your specifications.”

“Specifications, yes.” He stroked his hand over the soft blue fabric once more. “I would like a pillow made from this fabric. What fillings do you use?”

“We can use feathers or down, making it as soft as you wish.”

He considered how they would use the pillow and shook his head. “Soft, yes, but it would have to be resilient as well. Firm enough to lend support to one’s body.”

She blinked. “Like a sofa cushion, perhaps?”

“Yes.” He spread his arms apart a bit wider than shoulder width. “This wide, I think. And no thicker than my waist.”

She jotted down some notes. “A rectangle?”

He shook his head. “No. Would you be able to make it like a roll? Cylindrical?”

She nodded. “Certainly. No difficulty at all. I can have this ready for you by tomorrow.”

Edward smiled. “Capital. Do see it delivered to the Grange?”

“I hope you will be pleased with our efforts, Mr. Linden. We would much enjoy providing you as you go forward with your decorating.”

Edward nodded and took Cathy’s package, stepping out of the shop. The pillow would indeed suit, if it was made to his specifications. Firm enough to hold Cathy’s body yet soft on her smooth belly. If they were to take her in her pretty little ass, she would need to be as comfortable as possible. The thought of caressing her perfect bottom, propped up by the pillow, and spreading her cheeks to reveal the secret path to pleasure had him drawing a sharp breath. Tomorrow could not come soon enough.

“Mr. Linden!”

He jerked his head to find Clarisse and Mrs. Middleton approaching. He bowed his head. “Ladies.”

“How does this day find you?” Mrs. Middleton asked. “I daresay we had hoped you would attend the card party at the Holdens’ last evening.
